Paul Sinclair is a forty-six-year-old biblical lecturer of ancient languages at the University of Boston. At the age of seven he accidentally ends up in a lake, drowning within a few minutes. In the seven minutes of cardiac arrest he sees a male figure who takes him by the hand, accompanying him beyond a door. When he overcomes this his heart begins to beat again. Since then he has studied all the ancient texts in search of that God who has given him back his life. After six months an insider of the Vatican’s secret services finally decides to meet him in Italy. He promises to show him the path that will lead him to the truth in which he has always sought. When he arrives in Palermo he finds himself enrolled in an exhibition of ancient paintings by unknown people. In the so-called Da Vinci room, Paul wins a bet with a Japanese tourist by collecting the symbolic dollar agreed upon at stake. Even the exhibition’s tour guide Sara approaches him at the same time, intrigued by his deep knowledge on the subject. In a moment of distraction, the Japanese is stabbed. Paul and Sara, in an attempt to help him, find their hands dirty with his blood with the eyes of the people on them.
While they are fleeing, Paul pulls out the dollar that the Japanese has written a phrase on and that hides a hidden meaning. They have only one way to prove their innocence, to find the culprits. He begins a treasure hunt among the monuments of Palermo to decode the messages that from time to time they encounter during the journey. Meanwhile, a Vatican secret service congregation known as The Entity has ordained the elimination of anyone who is aware of the information leaked through the insider. Even the police commissioner Mancuso of Palermo is on their trail, looking for those responsible for that murder. A deed that anticipates being impossible will lead the two to discover an imminent mass extinction event and the greatest cover-up that the history of humanity has ever known.
